Rejoining the Wave

 Hey there,

My name is Edward ("Teddy") Benjamin and I am a Pharmacology Graduate student at Tulane. I will be blogging each month about my volunteer hours and my experiences as a student in the Pharmacology program.

I went to Sewanee: The University of the South for undergraduate education and am a New Orleans native. I majored in Biology in undergrad, but I had a healthy dose of many different subjects including Math, Econ, Chemistry, and Spanish during my time at Sewanee. It was a fairly rigorous academic program, but the adjustment to graduate student life has been challenging especially with a difficult program like Pharmacology.

I have previously taken a class, Calc II, at Tulane, but it was ages ago so there was a lot of stuff to reacquaint myself with regarding Tulane and classes. Thankfully the staff has been very helpful with this process and always makes themselves available for questions in person or through email if need be. This made the transition much easier, but it was still difficult at times because I have not taken classes before that require familiarity with such a heavy amount of material. We have covered the basic principles of Pharmacology, Inflammation, and ID and Cell Biology modules to this point. We just recently started the Neuromuscular module as well which is especially interesting to me. I think this fascination stems from a deep love of sports which has fostered my intrigue into how the muscles and body work.

In order to excel in these modules, I had to develop more efficient use of my time and practice better study habits. We have a fairly small class, but my wonderful classmates have played an instrumental role in this process. I always learn best through seeing how others do things and modifying it in order to be more specialized for myself so this support system has been very important in this journey.

I am looking forward to continuing my growth as a student and a member of Tulane's Pharmacology program! I will keep you all posted about the volunteer service I work with and how that experience goes as well in the future.
